Reporting Accidents

Any accident must be reported to the staff member you are working with or to the College Office within 24 hours of the occurrence.

If you see something that looks unsafe or may cause injury please advise the staff member you are working with or the College Office as soon as practical.

Cardinal Rules

Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment must be worn at all times.

Do not override, remove  or interfere with any safety equipment, including guards or shields.

All injuries and incidents must be reported.

Everyone working in a laboratory or workshop must have authorisation of the area manager.

In an Emergency

1. For external help contact UC Security.
2. Dial 6111 or 0800 823 637 (from mobile phone).
3. Tell UC Security what happened.
4. Dial 1-111 for Emergency Services – Police, Fire, Ambulance.

Serious injury

For a medical emergency or serious injury:
1. Render assistance if able.
2. Call UC Security on 6111 or 0800 823 637 (for university medical services).
3. Call the Ambulance Service by dialling 1-111.
4. Give first aid until the arrival of an ambulance or qualified medical expert.

Fire

1. Raise the alarm immediately by operating the nearest fire alarm.
2. Call UC Security on 6111 or 0800 823 637.
3. Notify the Fire Service by calling 1-111.
4. Close down potentially dangerous processes or machinery if possible to do so safely and quickly. Leave lights on.
5. Evacuate the building by nearest exit. Do NOT use lifts.
6. Report to your designated fire assembly area (see map on back for assembly areas).

Emergency Assembly Areas

Earthquake

1. Drop, Cover, Hold – take shelter under solid furniture or in doorways.
2. Move away from windows and falling or moving objects.
3. When shaking stops pick up personal possessions (keys, phone, wallet, etc) if safe to do so.
4. Evacuate the building by the nearest exit. Do NOT use lifts.
5. Proceed to the nearest earthquake evacuation point, as listed on maps throughout all of the University's buildings.
6. Main assembly area for earthquakes is ILAM FIELDS.
